Factors Influencing Biodegradation

Both acids and bases can catalyze the hydrolysis of PLA. Polylactic acid degrades fastest under alkaline conditions, followed by acidic conditions, and slowest under neutral conditions.

Crystallinity

The degradation process always begins in the amorphous region and gradually expands to the crystalline region. Due to the tight packing of molecular chains in the crystalline region, water is not easily permeable, resulting in a relatively slower degradation rate.

Stereoregularity

Stereoregularity also affects the degradation rate of PLA. Under alkaline conditions, PLA with different stereoregularities degrades at different rates.
